While on vacation with actor Matthew Broderick, whom she had been seeing informally during Ferris Bueller’s Day Off production, Grey sustained severe whiplash in an automobile accident in Enniskillen, Northern Ireland, on August 5, 1987.
The accident, which led to the discovery of their relationship, happened when Broderick, driving a rental BMW, strayed into the wrong lane and collided head-on with a Volvo being driven by a mother and daughter, Margaret Doherty and Anna Gallagher.
Both were killed instantly in the collision. Broderick was found guilty of driving recklessly and given a $175 fine.
