2. Early Life and Career of Todrick Hall

On April 4, 1985, Todrick Hall was born in the rural town of Plainview, Texas, in the state's panhandle. Before his mother married while he was a teenager, he was raised by a single mother; as a result, he now has a brother and stepfather. The family would later relocate to Dallas.

He loved The Wizard of Oz as a kid. As an adult, he would produce Oz, the Musical, The Wizard of Ahhhs, the visual album and tour Straight Out of Oz, and the hit a cappella quintet Pentatonix.

Hall was introduced to the performing arts, such as ballet, music, and theater, by a primary school teacher in Dallas.

Hall revealed to his family that he was gay when he was 15. At Six Flags Over Texas, he started performing on the weekends when he was 16. This was the first time he blended singing and dancing.

Additionally, he gave performances at Walt Disney Parks and Resorts and on cruises with Royal Caribbean and Holland America Line. Hall has claimed that his work ethic results from his limited chances as a black homosexual in the entertainment industry.

2006–2010: American Idol, Broadway, and YouTube

At age twenty, Hall appeared in an audition for The Color Purple alongside Fantasia Barrino and Oprah Winfrey.

He was chosen for the group to fill in for Harpo. Having worked with Barrino, who became famous after winning the third season of the reality singing competition American Idol, Hall was later inspired to apply for the program.

After The Color Purple, he appeared in Memphis for the touring productions of Beauty and the Beast, Hairspray, and the Radio City Christmas Spectacular with the Rockettes.

Hall eventually settled in a four-bedroom, “nondescript three-story home in the Hollywood Hills” after moving to Los Angeles.

He produced over 300 videos five years after joining the YouTube online community in May 2006. His viewer count reached ten million in 2008 after he posted a video of a performance of “Hard to Say Goodbye.” In 2011, Hall made YouTube his full-time occupation.

Some of his well-known videos inspired later concert tours like “Twerk Du Soleil” and “Toddlerz Ball.”

Hall applied for the ninth season of American Idol in Dallas, Texas, in August 2009. To support his claim that he should be included in the program, he sang a song he had written, mentioning the judges (Simon Cowell, Randy Jackson, Kara DioGuardi, and special guest judge Joe Jonas).

The audition song was Hall's “fondest memory” as he remembered his time on American Idol years later. After receiving their unanimous approval to participate, he entered Hollywood Week and eventually the semifinals.

On March 11, 2010, following his performance of Queen's “Somebody to Love,” he was one of four candidates eliminated from the competition in the Top 16; as a result, he finished between 13th and 16th overall.

Hall received a harsh statement from Judge Simon Cowell that he “wouldn't amount to anything beyond a Broadway actor”. Following his post-audition walk outside with his golden ticket, Hall later admitted that he regretted keeping his sexuality a secret for the show.

Virgin America created a pop-music safety film with music by Jean-Yves Decornet in November 2013. Jon M. Chu directed the video.

Hall appeared in the video, composed the lyrics, and sang it. In December 2013, Hall released a holiday album named Dear Santa that featured original songs “So Cold” and “SplitsOnXmasTrees,” as well as renditions of “This Christmas” and “Sleigh Bells” by wiidope.

Pop Star High & Todrick docuseries, 2014–2015

All the most well-known pop stars of the period in which the series is set attended the same high school. In the show, pop artists such as Lady Gaga, Beyoncé, Britney Spears, Nicki Minaj, Justin Timberlake, Taylor Swift, Christina Aguilera, Ne-Yo, Kanye West, Eminem, Jay-Z, and Tyga are portrayed and mocked.

He was also the first artist featured on VH1's Huge on the Tube series in February 2015.

Kinky Boots, Straight Outta Oz and RuPaul's Drag Race for the years 2016 to 2017

Hall initially appeared as a guest judge on RuPaul's Drag Race's eighth season for an episode that featured a task inspired by The Wonderful Wizard of Oz and aired on April 11, 2016; they were unaware of his longstanding love for the film.

Later in 2016 and again for the ninth season of RuPaul's Drag Race, shown throughout 2017, Hall returned as a judge on the show full-time.

2017 the Straight Outta Oz Tour was resurrected in several North American, European, and Australian cities between March 30 and June 5.

It was released with an enhanced deluxe edition containing songs that were part of the tour but were absent from the album's first release.

The album also featured a reworked version of Todrick's prior song “Low” with RuPaul in addition to an extended version and a new video for “Wrong Bitch”.

The Greatest Dancer, Haus Party, Forbidden, and Quarantine Queen are all scheduled for 2018–2020.

Forbidden, his next video album, was published in March 2018 as a follow-up to Straight Outta Oz. Hall set out on the Forbidden: The Tour, traveling through the Americas, Europe, Asia, Australia, and New Zealand to promote the record.

Hall announced in May 2019 that he would release a trilogy of extended plays over the following six months. Haus Party, Pt. 1, the debut EP, and its lead song, “Glitter,” were released on May 16, 2019.

The smash song “Nails, Hair, Hips, Heels” was included on the EP, and Ciara remixed it. The Haus Party World Tour served as the EPs' support system. Part Two's release date was postponed from July 2019 to September 19, 2019.

Hall released “Magic Happens” in February 2020 as the theme song for the new twice-daily parade at Disneyland. Hall claims that he “learned to dance by watching Disney parades”.

The EP, dubbed Quarantine Queen, based on the COVID-19 pandemic, was written and recorded over the previous week, according to a post made by Hall on social media on April 27, 2020. The release day for the album was April 29, 2020. Hall joined CAA Management in May 2020.

It was revealed in January 2022 that Hall would be a contestant in the third season of Celebrity Big Brother.

He reached the top three and finished the season as runner-up. Hall received a lot of backlash during his time on the show for body-shaming viewers and critics by bullying Shanna Moakler and making comments about her appearance.

After viewers saw the unsubstantiated insults and attempts at defamation Hall leveled at Chris Kirkpatrick on the live streams, he faced more criticism.
