Paul Montgomery Shore is an American actor, comedian, and director known for his roles in comedic films from the 1990s.
He gained popularity as an MTV VJ and went on to star in movies like Encino Man, Son in Law, and Bio-Dome.
Shore’s films showcased his unique comedic talents and he has continued to perform standup comedy and make appearances in films and TV shows.
He is known for his exaggerated surfer-dude persona, quick-fire jokes, and catchphrases like “Hey, buuuuddy!”
2. Pauly Shore’s Early Life
Shore was born Paul Montgomery Shore, the son of Mitzi Shore (née Saidel; 1930-2018), who owned and ran the Comedy Store from 1974 until her death after receiving it in her divorce settlement, and Sammy Shore (1927-2019), a comic who co-founded The Comedy Store with Rudy De Luca.
Shore was brought up Jewish and lived in Beverly Hills as a child.
In 1986, he received his high school diploma from Beverly Hills and graduated with his three brothers, Peter, Scott, and Sandi.
2. Pauly Shore’s Career
Standup Career
At the Alley Cat Bistro in Culver City, a 17-year-old Shore made his standup debut, inspired by his parents’ comedy and show business careers.
“While the rest of the students in my school filled out their SAT applications, I simply handed mine back. I was certain that I would not attend college.
He was surrounded by comedians for a large portion of his upbringing.
Pauly gained a mentor in Sam Kinison, who opened a number of his sets.
While performing in comedy clubs, Shore developed his “The Weasel” alter ego image.
In “The Weasel,” Shore used a surfer dialect that was highly laced with dude speak slang words like “edged,” “melons,” and “grinding,” as well as his signature line, “Hey, BU-DDY.”
4. Pauly Shore’s Rise to Fame and Major Achievements
MTV
As an on-air MTV VJ, a position he held from 1989 to 1994, Shore received his big break.
Shore headlined MTV’s annual Spring Break parties and had his own show, Totally Pauly, at the height of his MTV fame. “Lisa, Lisa, the One I Adore” is the title of a music video he also released.
Film career
In 1992, Shore starred in the modestly successful film Encino Man.
The popularity of the movie encouraged Shore to star in other distinctive projects.
However, they were all progressively less popular: Son in Law (1993), in 1994 “In the Army Now”, Jury Duty (1995), and Bio-Dome (1996).
Each of the five films had terrible reviews, with the last three having a Rotten Tomatoes score below 10%. Each movie also made less money at the box office than the one before it.
Roger Ebert, a film reviewer, said of Shore’s performances in these films: “Shore bypasses all classifications to achieve a sort of transcendent fingernails-on-the-blackboard effect.” Pauly, a television series with the same name that starred Shore in 1997, was cancelled after five episodes.
Shore appeared as a pizza deliveryman in a brief cameo in the song “Break Stuff” and in the music video for the song “N 2 Gether Now” by the American rock band Limp Bizkit.
Shore received numerous accolades for his performances in films from the Golden Raspberry Awards, including Worst New Star of the Year in Encino Man along with Worst Actor of the Year in Bio-Dome and Worst New Star of the Decade for the 1990s, and Worst Actor of the Century (which Sylvester Stallone won).
Pauly later produced and starred in other of his ventures, including “Pauly Shore is Dead,” as well as the comedy specials “Vegas is My Oyster,” on Showtime with Andy Dick, Tom Green, Bobby Lee, and “Pauly-Tics,” on Showtime with Herman Cain and Larry King.
2014 saw the publication of “Pauly Shore Stands Alone,” a road documentary based on actual events that follow Pauly as he plays in small Wisconsin villages while juggling his personal life.
Both Amazon Prime and YouTube have it available. It aired on Showtime.
The semi-autobiographical mockumentary Pauly Shore Is Dead, which Shore produced, wrote, directed, and starred in, received the most outstanding reviews of his career (57% on Rotten Tomatoes, much above his 1990s films).
2005 Shore also starred in the brief reality television series Minding the Store. Shore starred in the 2010 film Adopted, where he visits Africa to adopt a child.
Adam Sandler’s “Sandy Wexler,” the short film “Sin City Psycho,” Dreamworks’ animated “The Big Trip,” Lionsgate’s animated “The Little Penguin: Pororo’s Dinosaur Island Adventure,” and the independent film “How it Ends” with Whitney Cummings, Olivia Wilde, Nick Kroll, and others are some of the other recent projects.
In addition, Pauly starred in the film “Guest House,” which is currently available for digital and on-demand streaming on Netflix.
Pauly voices characters in “Pinocchio: A True Story” and “My Sweet Monster” from Dreamworks in 2022.
In 2017, Pauly published a collection of video interviews titled “Pauly Shore Podcast Show.” Judd Apatow, Bob Saget, Iliza Shlesinger, and others were among his visitors.
Pauly also hosted the “Pauly Shore’s Random Rants” podcast, which you can hear on Bill Burr’s All Things Comedy, Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Stitcher, and YouTube.
Pauly also produces entertaining content for his followers, including music videos with his band, “Pauly Shore and The Crustys,” a five-minute workout show called “Sweatin with the Wiez,” recreations of classic movie scenes known as “Classic Scenes from Classic Movies,” and five-minute workout shows. All of these can be found on YouTube, Instagram, and TikTok.
In episode 10 of the famous TV show Alone Together from March 2018, Shore appeared in his person. In addition to actively touring the nation with his standup comedy, Pauly is also putting the finishing touches on a documentary about his life that spans the ’70s, ’80s, and ’90s, as well as a memoir called ‘How’d You Expect Me to Turn Out’ and a one-person show about his life called ‘Stick with the Dancing: Funny Stories From my Childhood’.
