How To Start A Blog: Step-By-Step

Starting a blog is very simple, but it depends on what you want it for or what your objective is. That's why I'm going to show you how to create one with the best options according to your own case: if you want a personal blog, a professional blog, a corporate blog, a themed or niche blog, etc.

In other words, I'm going to show you how to create the blog you really need in your specific case.

How to create a blog according to the type you choose

There are many ways to shape an idea, such as opening a blog, but you have to choose the one that best suits your needs, so that it really comes out and becomes something worthwhile for you and your readers.

Because every blog is a world (here you can see the possibilities that a blog has), and even more so if it is created for different things.

The idea is that this article will serve as a guide to choose what is best for you specifically.

So, click on the options that best fit what you want to do to move forward until you reach the best solution.

What do you want to do?

👤 How to start a personal or niche blog

If you want to create a blog to tell your personal experiences, reflections or ideas; or you simply want to write about a specific subject (a blog on history, economics, technology, etc.), this may be the best solution.

But before we go any further, I want you to ask yourself this question:

Do you think that at some point your blog could become something more “serious” or do you want to generate income with it?

I ask you this because many people when they start a blog of this type do not take into account whether it will grow more later, and that's why they choose to create a blog for free. The normal thing is to think “well, at the moment I'm going to do a free blog and if in the future I see that things are going well I'll change it”. Wrong. ☹️

When that time comes, many regret it…

This “change” from a free blog to something more serious or professional can become a big problem and you could lose all the visits you receive from the Google search engine if you do it wrong. To give you an idea, in my case for example, that could mean 60% of my visits…

It is very important to choose well from the beginning and something as “simple” at first sight as making a free blog, can be precisely what stops your growth. A minimal investment in the long run saves you much more time and money.

And I'm not saying anymore if you also want to make money with a blog. If you don't invest in it, don't expect others to do so later… 🤷♂️

Do you think that at some point it could become something more “serious”?

➤ It will not become anything more “serious”:

🦶 Steps to create a blog

The domain

If you have not yet decided on the name and domain of your blog, see how to choose the best domain.

The hosting

Choose the hosting you need (here I explain what a hosting is).

In this case, as it is a personal or thematic blog, it is normal that at the beginning you don't have many visits and you will only need a basic and cheap hosting, but of quality. I recommend the SiteGround StartUp Plan which also comes with SSL, the domain for free when you contract it for at least 1 year, 10Gb of space, easy installation of WordPress, backup copies, etc. Very recommendable! 👌

Install and configure WordPress

Finally, you only have to create the blog with WordPress.org, which is the content manager I always recommend for its simplicity and at the same time for being so complete.

Here's how to blog on WordPress.org.

⚠️ Important ⚠️

As soon as you have your hosting, don't hesitate to follow point 3 to start setting up your WordPress and configure even the most basic things NOW, don't let those desires of creating a blog get “cold”. Many people buy a hosting and in the end they do nothing out of laziness or neglect, and they stay the same as before and having spent money foolishly.

👚 How to create a fashion blog

This type of blog is one of the most popular in recent years, but many people are looking for ways to make a fashion blog without taking into account the real needs of a blog of this style.

It is not simply a question of writing about fashion, trends, etc. Here the design of the blog plays a fundamental role in capturing the attention of a very demanding type of reader who seeks the highest quality in the images so that they can see even the smallest detail of the clothes (dresses, trousers, T-shirts, etc.), the accessories (shoes, bags, hats, etc.) and the jewellery (earrings, rings, bracelets, etc.).

Let me be very clear: don't think for a moment about creating a free fashion blog if you are really serious.

With the competition in this sector you should invest in quality and differentiation using a platform like WordPress.org hosted on your own hosting (here I explain what hosting is), which makes it much easier for you to create your blog with thousands of designs oriented towards the fashion sector.

And you can also use an infinite number of plugins to connect your blog with your social networks such as Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, etc.

But perhaps most important of all to create a good fashion blog is that you enjoy doing it for real. As I said before (and you probably already know very well), there are a lot of fashion bloggers and one of the best ways to differentiate yourself from the rest is to transmit your passion for fashion, and that (if you have read many fashion blogs) is obvious, right? 😉

So you know, if you want to become a fashion blogger, the most important thing is quality, design, and that you enjoy it!

🦶 Steps to create a fashion blog

The domain

In case you haven't decided yet on the name or domain of your blog, take a look at how to choose the best domain.

In this case it is not necessary that the domain contains necessarily the word “fashion”, because the interesting thing is to promote your personal brand. This is what fashion bloggers do, such as Lovely Pepa, Dulceida, My Peep Toes, Collage Vintage, Trendy Taste, etc. 😃

The hosting

In this case, as it is a fashion blog where design and images are key, it is important to look for a fast hosting with enough space. That's why I'm going to recommend you 2 according to your specific case:

If the blog is new, it is normal that when you start you have hardly any visitors and you will have more than enough with a basic but quality hosting package.

I recommend the Raiola Networks Home Hosting (specific for use with WordPress) which also comes with SSL, the domain included free when you contract it for a minimum of 1 year and 5GB of space.

If you already have your blog and what you are looking for is to move it to WordPress.org or change your hosting because you are “running out of space” (by space or by visits).

I personally recommend Plan L for Webempresa because as well as being fast, they have 10GB of space and their own image optimizer. It also comes with SSL, the domain for free if you hire a minimum of one year.

Install and configure WordPress

Finally, you only have to create the blog with WordPress.org, which is the content manager I always recommend because it's so easy to use, so complete, and because it allows you to customize it 100% to your liking.

Here's how to blog on WordPress.org.[LINK TO WORDPRESS ARTICLE]

Extra step

Once you have WordPress installed in your hosting, don't forget to choose a design that is fashion-oriented, that gives importance to photos.

I personally like StudioPress designs very much for their simplicity and speed of loading (that's why I use it in this blog and I'm an affiliate of them), so I leave you here these 3 options in case you like any of them:

  • Gallery Pro Theme + Genesis Framework

✈️ How to create a travel blog

It is undoubtedly one of the most interesting and fastest-growing types of blogs, driven mainly by two types of bloggers: influencers who show idyllic sites using very high quality images, and backpackers who document their travels in detail (for example to exotic countries or little known places).

In travel blogs the details of each lived experience are primordial, no matter how insignificant they may seem; the reader is not looking for a simple objective and cold description of what he will see (for that he already has the typical travel guides), what he is looking for is to know what has been YOUR experience in each of the phases of the trip, your impressions, opinions, advice, recommendations, etc.

And of course here the high quality photos have a fundamental role to document each trip.

So forget about creating a free blog if you want to dedicate it to your trips, because it is a super competitive sector and there is little you can do if you don't differentiate yourself from the others… And that's why I recommend you to do it with WordPress in your own hosting, because it is a very powerful content management system with a lot of potential to customize everything to your liking (there are an infinite number of templates oriented to this type of blogs).

And of course, you can use plugins that will connect your travel blog with your social networks to easily share everything you publish. 👌

So you know, if you want to become a travel blogger, the most important thing is that you tell your real experience, the quality of the photos, the design of the blog, and that it is you!

🦶 Steps to create a travel blog

The domain

In case you haven't decided yet on the name or domain of your blog, take a look at how to choose the best domain.

In this case it is not necessary that the domain contains necessarily the word “travel”, because the interesting thing is to promote your brand or the area where you plan to travel. This is what travel bloggers do, such as Mochileando por el mundo, Los viajes de Domi, Japonismo, Inteligencia Viajera, Pasaporte para viajar, etc. 😃

The hosting

In this case, as it is a travel blog where design and images are key, you need a fast hosting with enough space. That's why I'm going to recommend you 2 according to your specific case:

💻 How to create a professional blog

Creating a professional blog is becoming one of the best options to take a step further in your professional life. There are many ways in which you can do this, such as making a photography blog, a travel blog, a digital marketing blog, etc.

It's not just about offering an “online letter of introduction”, but about showing what you can do; because showing it is the best way to get noticed by both customers and potential employers.

My advice is without a doubt that you should not even think about creating a free blog, and that you should use a platform like WordPress.org, which gives you all the facilities to customize your professional blog without limits (designs, plugins, e-commerce, online payments, etc.). But the important thing is that the positioning of your blog can be much easier using for example plugins that do most of the work.

Besides, the good thing about the professional blog is that it allows you to offer your professional services while publishing articles associated to the subject of your profession or that can simply help you boost your professional image. That alone makes a blog of this type worthwhile.

🦶 Steps to create a professional blog

The domain

If you have not yet decided on the name and domain of your blog, here is how to choose the best domain.

You should consider whether you prefer to choose a domain associated with your personal name, the subject matter associated with your profession or more specifically with the product or service you offer. A good trick is to think about how you want people to find you on Google. 😃

The hosting

Choose the hosting you need, no more and no less (here I explain what a hosting is).

In this case, as it is a professional blog, you must take care of its quality, such as being fast. For that reason I am going to recommend you 2 hostings according to your case:

If the blog is new, it's normal that at the beginning you don't have many visits and you will only need a more basic and cheaper hosting, but of quality.

I recommend the SiteGround StartUp Plan (which is precisely one of the recommended by WordPress.org) or the Raiola Networks Hosting Base (both come with the free domain name when you contract it for at least 1 year).

If you already have a blog and you're looking to move it to WordPress.org or simply change your hosting because it's getting “too small”.

I personally recommend Plan M or Plan L from Webempresa because they are powerful and use SSDs that go very quickly. They also come with SSL, the domain for free if you sign up for a minimum of 1 year.

Install and configure WordPress

Now you only have to create the blog with WordPress.org, which is the content manager I always recommend for its simplicity and at the same time for being so complete.

🏢 How to create a corporate blog (company, services, etc.)

Creating a corporate blog is one of the best ways to improve the visibility of your company or the products and services it offers. The creation of useful and quality content is one of the best ways to position yourself on the Google search engine so that you can be found and known by more people.

But it's not just a matter of creating a “virtual showcase” but of demonstrating what you really bring to the table, the solution you give to the needs of your customers. You can sell car wheels, but with the blog you can also demonstrate what they look like, their quality, how they are changed or even offer relevant information: which wheels to use in each situation, knowing when to change them, etc. In this way you will create a relationship of greater trust between your company's brand and the customer.

If you don't already use a platform like WordPress.org you can still use it to manage your blog separately; but please don't even think about creating a free blog. The advantages and facilities that WordPress gives you to customize your corporate blog are innumerable (designs, plugins, e-commerce, online payments, etc.) And WordPress.org also makes it much easier to improve the positioning of your blog, using for example plugins that do most of the work.

You can be sure that the image of your company will be reinforced because you not only offer your products and services, you also reinforce your brand and help the readers of your blog by providing information and content that can be useful to them. Who do you think they will choose when they need your services? The one who is only advertised or the one who also helped with the content of the blog?

🦶 Steps to create a corporate blog

The domain

If you have not yet decided on the name and domain of your blog, here is how to choose the best domain.

You should consider whether you prefer to choose a domain associated with the name of your company, the subject matter associated with it or more specifically with the product or service you offer. A good trick is to think about how you want people to find you on Google. 😃

The hosting

In this case, as it is a corporate blog, you must take great care to ensure its quality, such as speed and technical service to help you in any situation. That's why I'm going to recommend you 2 hostings according to your case:

If the blog is new, it is normal that at the beginning you don't have many visits and a powerful hosting of medium-high quality will be enough for you.

If your blog already exists and you're looking to move it to WordPress.org or simply change your hosting because you have a lot of visitors and it's getting “too small”.

Then think about something much more powerful like the VPS and VPS Optimized Raiola Networks (for me the best VPS in Spain), which also comes with SSL, the free domain when you hire it for at least 1 year.

Install and configure WordPress

Finally, you only have to create the blog with WordPress.org, which is the content manager I always recommend for creating a blog because of its simplicity and at the same time because it is so complete.

🛒 How to create an online shop blog

Creating a blog for an online shop is becoming a very effective way to improve its web positioning and add value to the shop's products. Google loves recent content to show in its search engine, and publishing articles that talk about your products or topics related to them is the best way to always be in the “showcase” of the search engine when selling online.

The possibilities of the blog in this case are endless: articles to announce new products, to announce offers, social events related to the shop or products, contests, discounts, etc. This constant “activity” in the online shop helps the reader to participate more, to take it into account and gives him/her much more confidence if he/she is finally encouraged to buy any of the products.

This is why it is now as fashionable to create an online shop as a blog. 🙂

What you should NOT do in this case is to use a platform to create a free blog, because the image of your brand or your online shop depends a lot on a good design and a good presentation.

These are features that you can easily set up on a platform like WordPress.org (designs, plugins, e-commerce and online payment plugins, etc.) In addition, WordPress makes things much easier if you want to improve the positioning of your online shop thanks to SEO plugins that do most of the work.

In short, the creation of useful content associated with your online shop and the products you offer can give you a good boost. Not only will you be selling products, but you will also be showing yourself as a shop that is close and specialised in the subject; that knows what it is talking about.

Which online shop do you think they will go to when they look for your products, the one that only has the online shop or the one that also offers you useful content and more confidence thanks to the blog? 😃

🦶 Steps to create an online shop blog

The domain

If you have not yet decided on the name and domain of your blog, here you can see how to choose the best domain.

Please consider whether you prefer to choose a domain name associated with your shop name, the theme of your products or the specific product, if for example you only sell one type of product. A good trick is to think about how you want people to find you on Google. 😃

The hosting

In this case, as it is an online shop blog, its quality and speed are important, and the technical service will help you in any situation. That's why I'm going to recommend you 2 hostings according to your case:

If you are going to create a blog from scratch, at first it is normal that you have few visits, so it will be enough with a powerful enough hosting and medium-high quality.

I recommend Plan L from Webempresa because they are very powerful, use SSD disks that go very fast and give you support for WordPress. It also comes with SSL, the domain for free if you contract for a minimum of one year.

If you already have a blog in your online shop and you're looking to move it to WordPress.org or change everything to a much more powerful hosting because you're already “outgrown”.

Then I recommend the Raiola Networks VPS and VPS Optimised Servers, which also come with SSL, the domain for free when you contract it for at least 1 year.

Install and configure WordPress

Finally, you only have to create the blog with WordPress.org, which is undoubtedly the content manager I always recommend for creating a blog because of its simplicity and at the same time because it is so complete and has everything you will need.

🔹 How to start a blog for free (Free hosting + Free blog)

It is undoubtedly one of the most used options when it comes to launching into the world of blogging, especially on a personal level. These are some of its pros and cons:

👍 Pros

➤ You don't pay a penny, that's why they are free 😃

➤ They are very easy to configure and design

➤ Most allow you to associate your own domain with it if you want to buy it separately

👎 Cons

➤ You do not have full access to your data because the platform actually owns your blog

➤ Limited physical resources and total personalization of the blog

➤ SEO or web positioning may be more limited

If you finally decide to choose a free platform, there are plenty of pages to create a free blog, but these are the 2 options I recommend:

1. How to create a blog with Blogger

What is commonly called “creating a blogger”. It is undoubtedly one of the most used options within free platforms. It is the Google platform and therefore allows you to associate many options of yours with a simple click, such as adding your Google+ profile, Google+ comments, etc.

There are many designs and HTML templates already prepared for you to put on your blog, and if you have knowledge of HTML and CSS you can customize them to your liking. However, only use the templates that are adapted to look good from mobile devices, because Google is taking this into account more and more.

The domain that Blogger offers you will be of the type “yourdomain.blogspot.com”, but if you buy your own domain with any provider you can associate it without any problem. This way, for example, if you enter my personal blog through my own domain www.rubenalonso.es or the domain of Blogger rubenalonsoes.blogspot.com you will see that you are arriving at the same blog.

🦶 Steps to create a free blog at Blogger

Here is a Google guide [INSERT LINK] on how to blog for free on Blogger (blogspot) and with basic notions of its main functions.

Important: although it is a free blog, it depends on your case and what you offer in it, your blog could need a legal adaptation.

2. How to create a blog with WordPress.com

It's a little “less easy” to set up and use than Blogger, but once you get a hold of it you'll see that it's very simple too.

One of its strengths is that it has many more options when writing articles, such as adding surveys, different types of articles, categories, advanced text editing, etc. For all this, I personally prefer this option to using Blogger.

The designs and templates are more careful, besides that its installation and configuration is very simple, and you don't need to have knowledge of HTML and CSS. However, the best templates are already starting to be paid, so as you want to “go ahead” in the customization of the blog you have to go through the checkout … 💳

The domain offered by WordPress.com will be of the type “yourdomain.wordpress.com”, but if you buy your own domain with any provider you can. However, the partnership will cost you $13 per year. And if you decide to buy the domain directly from them, the cheapest is $18 per year.

Come on, nothing cheap…

Now, if you ever decide to move to WordPress.org, moving from a blog on WordPress.com is much less “dangerous” than moving from Blogger.

🦶 Steps to Free WordPress.com Blogging

Here's a simple step-by-step guide to creating a free WordPress.com blog. [LINK TO PAGE]

🔹 How to blog on WordPress.org

For me, WordPress.org is without a doubt the best option in most cases for creating a blog, and it also seems to be the best option for most websites that use some kind of content management system, and that's why! 😊

🔸 How to install WordPress

a) Manual

b) Automatic (recommended)

🔸 The WordPress desktop

🔸 Basic WordPress configuration

🔸 The WordPress template

🔸 Legal adaptation of the blog

🔸 Other important details

🔸 How to install WordPress

There are 2 options for installing WordPress.org on your hosting: manual and automatic.

I personally recommend the automatic one, because it avoids you going through many technical configurations that can be cumbersome. Thanks to the fast installations that most of the hosting control panels now have, you can install WordPress in Spanish in a few minutes without any problems.

Even so, I'll explain both of them to you so that you can choose the one you want:

a) Manual option

It's all about downloading the latest version of WordPress yourself from the WordPress.org site, unzipping it, and uploading it to your own hosting. Then you must create the database that will use your WordPress, configure the installation and finally carry it out.

> Installation in normal hosting

> Installation in virtual hosting or VPS (VestaCP control panel)

In this video the people from Raiola Networks also explain all the detailed steps for the VPS:

b) Automatic option

In most of the hosting is used the cPanel control panel. This usually has a WordPress installation service with its database automatically and in a few minutes, which makes things much easier. And as each hosting has its own installation service, I'm going to show you the most popular ones according to the hosting you hire:

> Installation from the cPanel in Webempresa hosting [VIDEO

> Installation from the cPanel in Raiola Networks hosting [VIDEO

> Installation from the cPanel in other hostings (Hostgator, Bluehost, iPage) [VIDEO

🔸 The WordPress dashboard

In this video you are going to see now I am going to show you what you will find when you enter your WordPress desktop. It's simply a matter of getting familiar with the control panel of your new blog, little by little, and seeing the most important sections: the desktop, the pages, the blog posts, the plugins, etc.

🔸 Basic configuration of WordPress

It is important to configure your WordPress well from the beginning to get the most out of it and thus help your web positioning from the first minute. All that can be done well now is time that you will save in the future, believe me.

🔸 WordPress design and themes

Another key aspect of creating a blog in WordPress is design.

The best way to do this is to choose a good template, also called a theme. And the important thing is that this template meets the needs of the type of blog you have chosen (that more importance is given to the images or text, that what you offer is well seen, etc.).

In this blog I now use Genesis + the Metro Pro theme and for example this guide to creating a blog improved its loading speed by more than 53%, which is appreciated by the readers of the blog, as well as being fundamental for SEO. 😉

Improved loading speed in Genesis Blog Guide [LINK OUT TO SPEED GUIDE]

Here is a link that will help you to choose a good template taking into account several aspects: responsive design (to look good on mobile devices), SEO, colours, fonts, loading speed, customization, etc:

➤ Choose the best WordPress theme for your blog [LINK]

But without a doubt StudioPress is my favourite place to find the perfect theme and logically that's where I bought the one I use now (and you've already seen that it loads very quickly):

➤ StudioPress: this is where you can get the famous Genesis with its themes, the most recommended ones because of their loading speed. [LINK]

👀 Don't forget one of the most important parts of a blog either: the logo – it's the image they'll remember when they talk about you!

Depending on your artistic skills, creating logos can be something you know how to do even in your sleep, or it can be something that keeps you up all night…

If you're one of those who has trouble designing or has no idea how to draw, take a look at these 2 online tools to create your own logo:

[INSERT 2 LLOGO CREATORS]

🔸 The legal side of blogging

Don't forget the legal details that your blog must comply with. Every blog is its unique use case and depending on the type of blog you have, what you offer on it or the data you collect from your readers, you will need some “legal adjustments” or others.

For example, if you offer professional services or sell products on your blog, you need “Terms and Conditions” which you would not need, for example, on a blog where you simply share information. But in both cases, if you have a list of subscribers in which you store their emails and names, you would have to take into account the European RGPD for data protection.

In this blog you are reading, to get me out of trouble and have everything 100% legal I had the help of a professional in data protection issues.

  • If you use Amazon affiliation or similar on your blog, you[INSERT LINK].
  • If you are going to use your blog as an online shop, the best is the ecommerce legal [INSERT LINK].
  • If what you are going to do is offer your own infoproducts, that's what the infoproduct legal kit is for [INSERT LINK].
  • And if your blog doesn't fit in the previous cases and is going to be a simple blog with its subscription forms, comments, etc., the one you should have is the webmasters legal kit[INSERT LINK].

Think that it is not only about complying with the law, but about giving your readers confidence so that they see that you are serious about your blog. In fact, it's a way to differentiate yourself from many other blogs in your area because (unfortunately) not all of them do.

Take advantage of it! 😉

🔸 Other important details

One of the keys for your blog to achieve the objectives you set with it is to define a good strategy. Making a blog and not knowing what you want to achieve with it is throwing your time away, believe me…

That's why it's very important that you read this other post to take the next step in your blog, to define your strategy:

➤ How to define your blog strategy in 3 steps [LINK]

And precisely so that your strategy is something real and tangible, one of the best “tools” for planning it is to use an editorial calendar, a place where you can define the articles you are going to write on your blog. In this way, you will have a clear idea of what you want to achieve with each of your posts and with your blog in general.

Take a look at it because it's worth it, really:

➤ Editorial calendar template for your blog [LINK]

Another key factor for your blog is precisely its SEO or web positioning, that is, that people can find you among the first results of Google searches for which you are interested in being found.

Here's a review of the SEO course that I've tried myself and that I recommend 100%:

➤ SEO course [LINK]

When creating a blog and writing articles, you should take into account which keywords best define your content, precisely in order to try to position yourself at the top of Google. This is achieved by doing what is called a keyword study (also explained in the SEO course I mentioned earlier).

And so that you can do this with the tool I use on this blog, here is a guide where everything is explained step by step:

➤ Keyword tool [LINK]

Another key point that cannot be missing from your blog is undoubtedly the mailing list. If you want to create a community that is faithful to your content and on which you can rely to grow your blog, then you need to have your own list of subscribers.

Here you have the most complete and updated MailChimp tutorial in Spanish, a mega guide in Spanish to the most famous email marketing tool. 🙂

➤ MailChimp [LINK]

Something that cannot be missing in your new blog are the images, because they are the best way to attract and keep your visitors. Can you imagine reading a text-only article without a miserable image? It would be the best way to bore your readers…

So here is a list of free image banks with the ones I use the most and my favourites:

➤ Free image banks for your blog or website [LINK]

As you can see, after blogging there are many things to consider, but don't worry about doing it all at once!

You enjoy writing, which is the important thing, and as you go along you can take a look at this tutorial you are reading, keep it in your favorites so you don't lose it!

Even so, if you have any doubts about any of the steps to make a blog, however basic you think it is, such as what a blog is and whether it's the same as creating a website, ask!

Leave a comment and if you want I will advise you on what type of blog you need to create, what platform or content manager to choose, what hosting is most worthwhile, etc.

I want this guide to serve you well, as a source of knowledge or a springboard to make your start in this blog world as easy as possible. 😃

And don't forget to share with everyone, that you are finally going to create your own blog!
